Location:
The Nowgen Centre, Manchester
We are looking for an ambitious, motivated and hard working bioinformatician to lead the training of NHS clinical scientists in bioinformatics. The successful candidate will take responsibility for planning and delivering suitable training and developing new opportunities in this area, using a new purpose-built 20-person bioinformatics training suite in The Nowgen Centre. With new technologies such as next generation sequencing and non-invasive prenatal diagnosis being developed, the importance of bioinformatics in the clinical setting and in research is being increasingly recognised. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful applicant to make a unique, important and valuable contribution to the development of bioinformatics training programmes in the UK.

The post holder will work for Nowgen, a Centre for Genetics in Healthcare and the National Genetics Reference Laboratory (NGRL) Manchester, in collaboration with NW e-health at The University of Manchester and others. Nowgen, A Centre for Genetics in Healthcare, sets out to inform and improve the practice of genetic medicine. Nowgen has a track record of delivering high-quality training courses for health, academic and industry professionals and this role offers an opportunity to join our successful, friendly and dynamic team.

NGRL Manchester works alongside the Regional Molecular Genetics Service at St Mary’s Hospital in Manchester. With a remit to support diagnostic genetic services in the UK, NGRL works with laboratories to develop, assess and support the introduction of new technologies into NHS diagnostic genetics services.

A first degree in biological or computer sciences, and a qualification or significant experience in bioinformatics are required, with a relevant higher degree an advantage. Knowledge of diagnostic genetic testing would be of particular advantage as the candidate will be working closely to support scientists using bioinformatics resources in clinical practice. An understanding of the use of bioinformatics in industry and academic research, and the necessary training requirements would also be advantageous.

This post is only open to new applicants.

The post is available immediately and tenable in the first instance until end March 2012.
