Maintenance and development of quality across genetic testing laboratories is of fundamental importance for equity of testing. Whilst the responsibility for quality assurance remains with individual laboratories in conjunction with NEQAS and the professional bodies, we have developed the capacity to make important new contributions to this area through the development of prototype reference material.

NGRL (Wessex) has developed prototype reference materials for the following genetic tests:

• Mutation scanning for BRCA1, BRCA2, hMLH1 and MSH2
  
• Generic Mutation Scanning
  
• RQ-PCR analysis of the BCR-ABL fusion transcript
