Technology Assessment
Commercial and research interest in Genetics generates an extensive selection of new technologies that could be applied by diagnostic laboratories. Technology Assessments are performed in response to the needs of the diagnostic genetics community on technologies considered relevant and cost-efficient. The NGRLs offer the UK diagnostic laboratories evidence based assessment of new and near service-ready products suited for appropriate usage to allow economic investments of funds.
We target our assessments to three types of technology:
- Those that are too expensive or difficult for individual laboratories to assess
- Those that are not yet ready for laboratory use, for which we aim to represent the needs of diagnostic laboratories to manufacturers and developers
- Those more easily assessed by network laboratories, for which we aim to facilitate sharing of testing, experience and opinions, rather than carrying out assessments ourselves
Technology Assessments are joint efforts with one or more UK Genetic Testing Network (UKGTN) or European laboratory and include collaboration with NGRL Wessex, the National Co-ordinating Centre for Health Technology Assessment and NHS Connecting for Health (CfH)). Outputs are being monitored to enable improvements in the process and assure optimal provision of information.
