International Classification of Diseases - Consultation

As a member of the Coding and Classification group of the Rare Disease Task Force, NGRL Manchester has been invited to contribute to the revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) on behalf of the UKGTN. A draft proposal outlining the rationale of the revision, ICD-10+ coding (an intermediate stage preparing for the next version) and proposed ICD-11 coding is being devised in stages, and the first draft for the full ICD-11 is scheduled to be published by the end of this year.

The ICD is the international standard disease classification mandated by the World Health Organisation for all general epidemiological, many health management purposes and clinical uses. These include the analysis of the general health situation of population groups and monitoring of the incidence and prevalence of diseases and other health problems in relation to other variables such as the characteristics and circumstances of the individuals affected, reimbursement, resource allocation, quality and guidelines.

It is used to classify diseases and other health problems recorded on many types of health and vital records including death certificates and health records. In addition to enabling the storage and retrieval of diagnostic information for clinical, epidemiological and quality purposes, these records also provide the basis for the compilation of national mortality and morbidity statistics by WHO Member States.

If you are an expert in one of the specialist categories of the ICD list and wish to contribute to the review process, we are inviting you to participate by providing comments on the ICD-11 draft. Get in touch with us and we will provide you with the relevant documentation. On 7th July, Chapter 4 addressing Nutritional Diseases was released for review.
